The Monday Grind

Monday's are hard anyway but because we missed last Monday due to President's Day today was exceptionally hard. The girls were still tired from the weekend but managed to get going enough to complete the day by lunch time.

We reviewed oo words and worked on the sound not spelling. Both girls did really well with the review today and the rest of the week we are going into a new sound and new words so I hope those go as smoothly.

We also worked on adjectives with our weekly poem. This is still a new concept that I hope we work really hard on so we can use more adjectives in our writing. The girls love our weekly poems and they are great for teaching grammar skills not to mention fun! I have some fun games planned to work on adjectives this week. Our computer is up and running so I have also found some free online games for them to play.

We are working on context clues/vocabulary in reading and today's word was foolish. This was a little tricky for the girls to figure out the meaning of so I think we will make a game of it and see if they can use the word at least once a day. The girls also were able to read their Raz Kids books today as well as familiar reading and the story of Samuel in their bible readers. They love getting to read and color a new story. We will also learn about Ruth and Samson this week in our bible lessons.

In math we worked on odd and even numbers and the girls are doing well and I laugh each time they sing the song to themselves to figure out if a number is odd or even. It is just a silly song I made up when I was teaching and used in my calendar time every morning so the kids knew it by heart just like the girls. Here it is, it is just a chant with no tune to it.  0, 2, 4, 6, and 8, Even numbers are really GREAT!  1, 3, 5, 7, 9, Odd numbers are really FINE!  We will review and finish fractions this week and be out of our KB book into 1A!!

We worked more with water and did an experiment with mixing and mixed and recorded the results of water/oil, water/salt, and water/shampoo. The girls love experiments and those with water are even better! I am getting a little board with water and ready for a change so I may look up some of my old teaching lessons for the rest of the year.

In art we did a lesson in Come Look With Me as well as drew a little picture and wove a place mat out of paper. A friend of mine gave a very cute art program to use with the kids and even Ian can do some of it! I am excited to start that soon and so are they! Ally adores art.

In PE the girls chose their yoga phonics DVD to do and we turned off the lights and the little kids sat in another room watching Scooby Doo so it was calm for our yoga today! We have decided three days of scheduled PE a week, especially since the girls will be starting soccer next week for two days a week.

I am still looking into curriculum for next year for our main lessons: bible, science, history, but more about that later!!
