Each year the last two weeks of school we use to do a fun unit study, usually followed by a trip. Well this year in just under a month our family along with my mom aka Nanny will be going back to Walt Disney World!!! It has been about 3 years since our last trip and we cannot wait!! Our unit study for the next few weeks is about Disney!! We will study the life of Walt Disney, history of the parks, movies, study Cinderella stories from around the world, look at various fairy tales, and more! We will do some fun themes movie nights out together by the kids!!
Day 2:
Ian worked on his Disney letter book while the girls finished up some math for the year!
Day 1
We started the unit by getting out lap books put together and ready to be added to each day! Even Ian is making one!
Today we did a lap book section on the four parks and listed the dates they opened and made a little timeline. Ian just colored a picture for each.
The kids made a list of Disney movies. That was fun! I will have each of them plan aovie might bestie out trip!
We are reading a biography of Walt Disney and adding a new fact each day to our lap book.
We read the story of Cinderella and filled in a story chart that we will be adding to in the days ahead. The girls are doing a Cinderella Around the World mini study!
We added a fact about Walt, a Mickey Mousr timeline, a neat WDW fact all to out lap books. Ian colored a picture of the Madic Kingdom for his. We are using the Internet a lot and I am letting the girls search!!
We all read the book The Jolly Postman and did some fun math review!
The girls heard me red the book The Gilden Sandal, a Middle Eastern Cinderella story. We added its story elements and will do more with it tomorrow.
Day 3
We had another fun day of learning! Ian worked on his disney abc book and added a page of Animal Kingdom to his lap book. He also sat in on storytime and did his letter and number review.
All of the kids did keyboarding and PE! We danced to Disney songs!
The girls did a math review! They also read some fairy tales.
In their Cinderella study they compared and contrasted the the two books we have read so far.
In their lapbooks they added to their biography of Walt Disney, added an interesting fact about WDW (there are over 1,000 hidden Mickey's), and then we looked up quotes by Walt Disney himself and discussed and added a section with those!
The girls had to practice piano as well.
We ended the day with a softball and a baseball game!
Day 4
We had a fairly light day today. We were out late with games last night and have another round of games tonight plus Em had an appointment at noon.
We are still reading More Stories from Grandmas attic so we read a chapter of that. Ian did his letter, number, counting, and phonics review. He also did some letter work in his Disney book. He colored and added a picture of Epcot for his lapbooks.
All the kids learned about animation from our Walt Disney biography. I found a cute Curious George flip animation book that we made for our lap books. It was really cute! The girls added in their biography about Walt and also found a new fact for that part of their lap book from researching.
In our Cinderella study we read the Vietnamese version called The Golden Slipper. We filled in our story element chart. We will finish this all up next week.
The kids did some PE and piano practice as well as xtramath. They have moved on to multiplication!
We watched a Disney movie while the baby napped since it was rainy out.
We did not do keyboarding or a fairy tale lesson today due to time.
Day5
Ian did well on his review skills and letter and number writing!! He added a booklet about how mail goes from our mailbox to the recipient based on the book The Jolly Postman. He put this in his lapbook!
All three kids had fun making and drawing a castle out of various shapes!
The girls and I worked on the next to last math review. Only one more to go!!
We read about Walt and added to our lapbooks as well as an interesting fact.
Today the girls added a Venn diagram comparing the 1928 Mickey to the 2015 Mickey!
In our Cinderella study they drew and compared the three settings from the three books we read.
We finished with piano, PE, keyboarding, reading, and a movie!!!
Day 6
We are nearing the end!! We hope to be done on Friday!!
Ian reviewed the essentials letters and numbers and dos some phonics and disney handwriting.
We all read Hansel and Gretal for our fairy tale and Ian colored a pictures of the witches house. The girls did a story pyramid with it. All three filled out a short and simple story map. I know this book is not Disney related but we also studied a few fairy tales :)
The girls finished our study on Cinderella around the world by measuring and comparing feet and shoes :)
We also finished reading More Stories from Grandmas attic!
In math the girls finished their 2b review!!!! We are done with Singapore until August!! We did do xtramath and some fairytale story problems.
In our lap books, the girls added about Walt as well as a new DisneyWorld fact! We also added a list of things we eat to do at each park using park maps!!
The girls had piano lessons and all kids did some PE and keyboarding!!
Day 7
Today I did something a little different and let the girls read from out Walt Disney Biography! I counted it as reading :) They each read one chapter and had to find a good fact to add to their lapbook. I also let them search the computer to find their last interesting fact about WDW for their lapbook.
We liked at maps of the parks today and highlighted things we want to do!
Ian reviewed his letters and numbers and is getting better!!
I read the fairytale Rumpelstiltskin and we made a jig saw puzzle from our favorite part and the girls wrote a cinquain poem about the main character.
The girls practiced piano and had some outside PE fun in the yard! We watched a movie while the baby napped because both Audrey and Ian have ballgame a tonight!
Day 8
The girls finished reading about Walt Disney. The book we read is a level 4.9 and they did SUPER!! I am so proud of them! I used the book retriever app to find the level.
We looked at park maps and mapped out what we want to do and marked them. We will practice more map skills one there!
Ian finished his Disney alphabet book!
Only 23 days until our trip!!!!
We played a game about time and all four kids joined in :) The girls did multiplication on xtramath and went up a few points!!
We did our final day writing projects that I found on teachers pay teachers. We did a first day of school and a final day of school. It was neat to see their growth.
We will keep up reading and multiplication over the summer as well as storytime and piano. I will also keep Ian reviewing letters and numbers. I may have the girls do writing once a week but I am not sure yet. We have a fun and busy summer!! DisneyWorld, VBS, music camp, dance camp, baseball, softball, cousin camp, time at Nanny and Pawpaws, Silver Dollar City, a visit fr Aubt Helen, library events, and more!!!
Next year we will move on to LHFGH and Preparing!! I think I will need our time off to organize and regroup!!
