This week I decided to combine our two weeks or half speed schedule and just write about each day : ) I will only be posting every other week. This may help everyone see a HOD unit more clearly and not so spread out! You may notice that some days I have several lessons or activities listed because even though we are going half speed through the guides we do math, reading/phonics, fine motor, handwriting, bible, writing, and language everyday! I will add highlights and a video to each week at the bottom.
We enjoy half speed and especially with the girls it has been such a relief on time. With their harder math a full Preparing day would take them over 4 hours. That would be fine but I have a busy one year old in the mix and a 5 year old in his first year of school and working on reading and plus all of the kids activities to keep up with. We are just not ready for a longer day yet : ) I know those long days will come but for now while my kids are still little (8, 8, 5, and 1), I want to just enjoy this season right now with as little stress as possible on everyone! With all the three older kids I am glad that being on the younger end of the guides gives us this time to slow down when we need it!
Day 1:
LHFHG
*Calendar: We doing better with yesterday, today, and tomorrow! We also made another bundle and got to do the bundle dance!
*Phonics: We worked on the lowercase h and lowercase i in AAR. We also go through and I give Ian a word and he has to write the first sound both in capital and lowercase form. We do this every day.
*Fine Motor: We had matched t sounds and found things that go together. We have danced to our HWOT CD and written our letters in block paper.
*Math: I found my 3D shapes and Ian is having fun with them! We are learning the names and matching faces!
*History/Rhyme:We read about the Passover and Pharaoh finally letting the Israelites go! Ian was super excited!!! We acted out the story!
*Bible/Music: We are working on Matthew 22:19 for this unit. We have said it, made motions, and traced some of it. Ian's AWANA verse also got worked on.
*Rotating: We acted out the story for this box on this day.
Preparing
*Reading: The girls were just assigned reading today. I did make them read two pages to each other for read aloud practice while I listened in. They also worked on day 12 of their reading and had to draw a picture and write about what is going on in their book!
*Writing: The girls wrote their outline for Elijah part 2. Again they did this on their own and did GREAT! The following day they turned their outlines into a rough draft that we revised and edited together to prepare for publishing!
*Language:We did a lesson over nouns in a series and both girls did really well!!! We are constantly reviewing about possessive nouns, plural nouns, singular nouns, common nouns, and proper nouns. We also did a review lesson.
*Poetry: We read our new poem A Good Day about two children building a pretend boat out of stairs and couch pillows! It reminded us of fort building with blankets and pillows and the dining room table!
*Bible: We are now working on Psalm 127:3-5! We read and did the discussion, marked it in our bibles, and listened to our new song on the CD.
*Math:We are still painfully working on division with remainders! It is going better but still taking them quite a while to get done and pages are full of erased mistakes and do overs. They are getting it slowly but surely. We also did a review and I could not make the girls do 25 of these division problems! I wrote out 15 each for them to do.
*Science: The girls had to copy a verse from Job to start their science notebook entry. They then read about the dessert and had to draw two dessert mammals. They will be working on this over a few units and adding bits and pieces to create a beautiful dessert scene by the end!
*History Reading/Story
time: I read about the Egyptians and the use of hieroglyphics. We found out that decoding them was lost until the discover and deciphering of the Rosetta Stone in 1922. We have since learned more about the ancient Egyptian civilization.
*Independent History: The girls had to draw and color a pyramid. They got to read a new book, The 5,000 Year Old Puzzle.
*History Project: We are making a car touche in this unit!! Today we made the dough and let it sit. It was messy but fun! I was planning on doubling the recipe for the dough but I didn't have enough salt. I am hoping just halving it so that both girls can make one will turn out okay.
*Rotating: Research was the lesson today. We took to our history reading and google to answer the questions on our web to find out more about hieroglyphics. I am loving the research file off the Facebook group! It helps the girls really organize the questions and comprehend.
Day 2
LHFHG
*Calendar: We are now using a 100 board and Ian loves it! He can count to 100 but will still skip a few numbers. This way he has a visual. We count up to each day we have been in school.

*Phonics: We did the lowercase j and k and really worked on writing them and producing the correct sound! We also played a game where we had to match sounds.
*Fine Motor: We matched more sounds in our DIC book! Ian had to cut and paste T and F sounds and he did GREAT! We also worked some on handwriting.
*Math: We reviewed our shapes and then moved on to patterns. Ian LOVES patterns!!
*Story time: Granny Fox has learned that Reddy is in trouble thanks to a trick she played on Ol Mistah Buzzard! Oh no!!!
*History/Rhyme: We read about God using Moses to part the Red Sea because Pharaoh chased after the Israelites after letting them go.
*Bible/Music: We traced some of Matthew 22:37 today as we practiced it.
*Rotating: God hid the Egyptian army in a cloud so we talked about clouds today and demonstrated how fluffy white clouds hold not water but dark gray ones hold the rain. Ian had the best time making our cotton ball clouds rain.
Preparing
*Reading: The girls are almost done with their mystery study. They read day 13 today and since our day was FULL I had them write a prediction on a sticky note to share the following day.
*Writing: The girls published part two of our Elijah's stories we are working on. Next week we will finish up with part three. We are using IEW's Bible Heros.
*Language: We are now working on pronouns. I have started a word wall for all of the language vocabulary we have been covering.
*Poetry: Today the girls had to do some creative writing with their poem and write about a time they built a fort or something and used their imagination! They did really well.
*Bible: We read our verses and discussed the mood and times when they could read the verse for comfort. They also sang along to the CD.
*Math: We are still working on long division. I decided to spend a few weeks on this and work about 5-10 problems each day. We will be leaving our regular Singapore lessons for a while.
*Science: The girls had to read a few pages in the Desert book and then tell me about what they read. They learned that a cactus has roots that stay close rather than spread out like other plants. They also told me about a beetle that has a nasty smell if you get too close.
*History Reading/Story
time: We learned that the Egyptians worshipped many god except the one true GOD. We also compared and contrasted this time period to our own lives.
*Independent History: The girls had some copy work and reading for today.
*History Project: We flattened out our dough from the other day. We are making a cartouche of the female pharaoh Hatsheput. I was really excited that they were only supposed to use half the dough we made. It was perfect for us to make two! We did go ahead and paint them the following day so that they would get too dry over the weekend. They turned out very good!
*Rotating: Today was vocabulary day!!! It takes the girls a while to get it done but they do a good job!
Day 3
LHFHG
*Calendar: We covered all of day 3 today in school!!! I decided to take advantage of his better listening skills and get a whole day done!!
*Phonics: We did the lowercase k in AAR as well as did all of our sounds and letter ID. We are working on sight words I, a, and am this week.
*Fine Motor: We matched some sounds today, wrote some letters, and read a few words!!!
*Math: We used our pattern blocks and built and colored patterns. I am teaching Ian AB, ABC, AAB, and ABB patterns. He is really enjoying it but if he goes to fast he gets a little mixed up. We are working hard on slowing down!!!
*Story time: I read a Halloween book about an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat! I did read some Reddy Fox and we learned that Granny now knows that Reddy is in trouble!!!
*History/Rhyme: After we counted in our rhyme and discussed what we have learned so far we read from the Family Time Bible. We read about the people complaining to Moses and Aaron about food and how God supplied it. He gave them manna in the morning. They were only to collect enough for one day except on the 6th day they had to collect for the Sabbath. God also sent them quail for meat.
*Bible/Music: We worked on Matthew 22:37 and finished tracing it and saying it while playing a game. We then sang along on our CD. We also worked on a verse for Ian's AWANA class this week.
*Rotating: Today we did science and we made a quail out of brown paper because we learned that God sent quail to the Israelites in the desert for their food. Our did not turn out very well at all but Ian had fun making it. Sorry no picture : (
Preparing
*Reading: The girls finished reading their mystery books today and had to find examples of fairness or unfairness in them as well as write about how they can improve on being fair. We will take the rest of the week to work on a project to sum up their books! We are going to make a mystery genre puzzle that I found through a google search.
*Writing: We are on our last part of our writing over Elijah this week. The girls re read the story and made their final outline that had to include a final clincher. We will add a lot to this over the week.
*Language: We worked on pronouns again with lesson 38 and 39. I also had them write the definition to three words from our language word wall for review. They are getting many of the different types of nouns confused.
*Poetry: Today we read our poem and acted it out and then learned more about Robert Louis Stevenson. We learned that the he had a nurse and a nursery for most of his childhood.
*Bible: The girls had their quiet time bible study with their cards today and then had to tell me about it and say their verses to me.
*Math: We are still working on our multiplication and division skills with reviews by mommy. They are also doing xtramath everyday and flashcard games as well as computer games and apps. They are getting better and it is taking less time on their division.
*Science: In science the girls read about life in the desert and had to fill in some questions with complete sentences. They found out that you cannot stick your hand in a cactus because an animal may be living in it!!
*History Reading/Story
time: The girls had to orally narrate today about the Babylonians and how they worshipped the sun, moon, and stars. We learned about their life and how they used a form of writing called cuneiform.
*Independent History: The girls read from the 5000 year old puzzle mystery book and then had to read from our Read and Draw through history book to draw a sarcophagus. They did really well on them and will color them on Day 4.
*History Project: We finished our cartouch last week so the girls had some free time today! I was sad that all of our hard work crumbled the very next day! They girls had fun making it though!
*Rotating: Today's lesson was a geography lesson where we used a map of ancient times and compared it to a modern day map. We found Egypt, Babylonia, and Mt. Arrat.
Day 4
LHFHG
*Calendar: Today we managed to cover all of day 4!!! Go Ian and mommy for getting a good flow going! We did all of our calendar skills and Ian is loving his 100 board!
*Phonics: We did the letter l today and colored some leafs in fall colors and wrote them. We also played a game where I would say a sentence where every word started with the same letter and Ian had to tell me the letter and sound the words started with. He did GREAT!
*Fine Motor: We worked on matching letters through a coloring page and also wrote some of our lowercase letters in HWOT.
*Math: We finished our pattern unit and Ian is loving it!! We may pause a bit in Essential Math and do some more fun pattern practice!
*Story time: Whew! Reddy Fox did not get shot by Farmer Browns Boy because he hid just in time but now that the boy knows where Reddy and Granny Fox live they have to find a new home and it will not be as nice as the one they are leaving.
*History/Rhyme: Ian is enjoying this rhyme more than the others. We read and learned the 10 commandments that God gave to Moses on Mt. Sinai.
*Bible/Music: We practiced Matthew 22:37 and Ian knows it!! I am so proud of him. We also worked on his AWANA verse for this week that he will say tonight.
*Rotating: We acted out Moses getting the 10 commandments from God.
Preparing Day
*Reading: The girls worked hard on getting their puzzle projects for their mystery books done! They turned out really cute! They had to create a puzzle with certain parts of their mystery included and then number each piece. Each piece then had to contain certain information on the back such as title and author, setting, characters, the beginning, the middle, suspects, how the mystery was solved, and clues from the book. There was a rubric included for grading and both girls made and A!!!
*Writing: Today was publishing day!!! The girls finished their stories about Elijah! They did really well and their style and content has gotten so much better!!! Next week we will take a little break from IEW and do some fun writings.

*Poetry: For a sharing activity the girls illustrated the poem.
*Bible: The girls added their new verses to their commonplace book in cursive.
*Math: I am still giving them review pages for multiplication and division practice. We will do this another week before going back to Singapore unless I see the need for more practice. They are also working on getting the parts for their ice cream sundae!
*Science: We found out that the wax covering on a cactus helps keep the moisture in so it can survive in the desert. The girls made two paper towel cacti and placed one in wax paper and the other just by itself and let them dry for an hour. The one left out dried out but the one in the wax paper stayed moist!
*History Reading/Story
time: We started the book Tirzah and what a good book!!! The girls are enjoying it and it helping to set them back in the time of Moses and the Hebrews being slaves. The girls did great on their narration this week writing about Abram and God's promise to him and his descendants.
*Independent History: Today the girls had to color the sarcophagus they drew on Day 3.They both did a neat job.

*Bible/Music: We sang and danced to our verse today!!!
*Rotating: We were supposed to make peanut butter play
dough but I didn't have all the ingredients so we just used regular old play dough to make a calf like in our story. Later that day I came across a recipe that I did have all the stuff for an it was a hit!

Usually I try to give the girls something to do as well if Ian has his day 5 lesson fall on a day where they have completed their unit. They usually go ahead and start the next unit or have a day of just the 3r's with some extra art and computer time.
Extras we do each week:
Piano practice for the girls 15 minutes each day with a 30 minute lesson once a week.
Keyboarding using Keyboarding Without Tears twice a week for all three kids.
I also try to get them active each day with various activities from their sports and dance to playing outside, going to the park, putting in a PE video, you tube videos, elliptical, taking a walk, and more!!
Journals: Each week the kids do a journal entry. Usually it is free write time but sometimes I do give them a topic. I throw in math lessons sometimes as well.
