Unit 8 of Preparing and LHFHG

Here is a look at unit 8 in both Preparing and LHFHG. We had a great two weeks learning about King David, Daniel, Ruth, the desert, reading, writing, and working on math skills! The second week we added in some fun Thanksgiving lessons before we take off for a week!!!

Day 1
LHFHG
*Calendar: Ian is almost ready to start skip counting by 5's!!!
*Phonics: The sound of e was our focus today in AAR. Ian also reviewed all of his letters and sound. We read a Batman book, his choice, for our free reading time.
*Fine Motor: Ian had to rhyme in his RS book today and did well. We also did some handwriting in our HWOT book. We then worked on sight words.

*Math: We worked on the concept of less today which took him just a bit because we spent so much time on more. He got it though.
*Story time:  Peter Rabbit is not a good friends according to Ian! He says that it is not nice to always trick your friends.
*History/Rhyme: I read to Ian about Samuel choosing a new king to replace Saul. A young boy named David was chosen because he had a good heart. David trusted God so much that he killed a lion, a bear, and a giant named Goliath.
*Bible/Music: We read Psalm 57:1 about trusting God and then finally got to a new song which we were all excited about.
*Rotating: Today we played a game where we had to hit a target just like David had a target. Ian loved it!!!

Preparing
*Reading: The girls had to read and then draw a picture of something they read about and write 5 facts about what they read.
*Writing: We are still writing about Daniel this week in IEW Bible Heros. We are working on part 2 this week. The following day we added good style to our rough drafts.
*Language: We worked on the verbs was and were and when to use them. We use was when we have a singular subject and were when the subject is plural. We also worked on the same thing for did, do , and does.
*Poetry: We read and talked about our new poem for the unit "Looking Glass" and decided that it was better for a reflection if the water is still rather than having ripples.
*Bible:  We have a new Psalm for this unit that we will be working on for the next few units, Psalm 34:1-9. This unit will focus on verses 1-3 where we read that we are always to praise God even when it is hard and we don't want to.
*Math: We are working on 7's this week in math. Both girls are doing well though Audrey still needs to work on her speed and memorizing facts. She still skips count to get the answers to her work. We did a day of word problems as well that the girls still struggle on if the problem has multiple steps.
*Science: The girls added a picture of a reptile and a desert invertebrate to their desert picture.
*History Reading: In Grandpa's Box we learned that Joshua is now the leader of the Israelites and he is trusting God to help him lead, even if what God tells him sounds odd like marching around a city, blowing trumpets, and shouting.
*Story time: We all read chapters 18 and 19 of Tirzah. We learned that they named the new baby Deborah. that Tirzah is tired of others still thinking she is just a child and that maybe she will be a matchmaker one day since she sees the interest between Merrie and Ram.
*Independent History: The girls drew and colored a picture of the Ark of the Covenant today. Both girls did well on these.
*History Project: The girls are working on making a map of the 12 tribes of Israel. Today they drew and labeled their map.
*Rotating: We researched the 12 tribes today and made a visual aide to help us remember the names and who was the mother of each child of Jacob.

Day 2

LHFHG
*Phonics: We did the sound for f today and made a list of words and then did some cutting and pasting. We also did some sight word work with yes and no and a little reading from a new sight word book! Ian is loving these!!!
*Fine Motor: We cut and pasted more rhyming words today!!! Ian is getting better.
*Math: Ian finished workbook A!!! He was so happy and I am very proud of him.
*Story time: I read to Ian how Reddy convinced Shadow the weasel to help him get Peter Rabbit. It turned out that Peter planned that Shadow would one day visit the briar patch, so he had tunnels with many twist, turns, and water! Shadow got lost in the briar patch! Reddy was tricked again!
*History/Rhyme: Today I read about Saul getting jealous over David. We learned that Jonathan, Saul's son was Davids best friend. Saul tried to kill David many times but God was with David. David could have killed Saul but chose to follow God. Ian and I just had these lessons in Sunday School and I am so proud of him for remembering and helping me tell them again : )
*Bible/Music: We colored a picture for our verse, traced some of it, practiced it, and listened to our song!
*Rotating: Ian made a self portrait today to show his outside and then we wrote underneath what makes him special on the inside. We learned that Saul was good looking on the outside but his heart inside was ugly and mean.

Preparing
*Reading: The girls finished reading their books for non fiction. We will start a project next week to end our study.
*Writing: The girls added the middle part of the Daniel story to their writing. Next week we will finish up with Daniel! The girls also had a free write journal on Friday. One wrote about Thanksgiving and one about Christmas.

:The girls had to read how the plants in the desert get water and then narrate toe what they read. We also did a desert paragraph in poetry to supplement.
*History Reading: In Grandpa's Box we read about Gideon leading his army in a strange way. He used 300 men, trumpets, torches, and jars to defeat the mighty Midianites that had been fighting the Israelites for many years.  Gideon, even though he was scared, trusted God to win the battle. We added a row of tents and a torch to our grandpa's box.
*Story time: We finished Tirzah today!!!! The girls were asking about a sequel : ) I told them it was all in the bible! They were a little sad to learn that Tirzah's parents would not enter the Promised Land one day with Tirzah and her siblings but I explained that it was the way God wanted it so we have to be okay with it. That seemed to make them feel more at peace with it.
*Independent History: The girls had to copy Hebrews 9:3-4 into their common place books in cursive to remind us to trust God and that he is faithful.
*History Project: The girls colored their maps according to the mother of each tribe, Leah, Rachel, Bilhah, and Zilpah. Their maps are looking very nice.

*History Reading: I read chapter 16 from Grandpa's Box and added a crown to our box. We learned how Israel wanted a king despite God so God gave them Saul who did not follow God. He was replaced by David, a boy who was after God's own heart. The girls did a written narration about how David came to be king and how he proved himself different than Saul.

Journals: Each week the kids do a journal entry. Usually it is free write time but sometimes I do give them a topic. I throw in math lessons sometimes as well.
Co op is attended once a week for all of us! We to on Tuesdays from 9-12. The girls are taking MFW Adventures in History and Apologia Flying Creatures. Ian is taking MFW Creation A to Z and Emersyn is in the nursery. I teach Kindergarten with Abeka K5.

Highlights of the Week November 9 - 13:

We had the AWANA grand prix race this week. The kids did not win but had fun making cars and racing them.

Ally had a dance performance this week.

Here is our Friday Showcase video of the kids favorite things they did.

Hightlights of the Week November 16-20:

We did a lot of fun Thanksgiving things this week along with our HOD studies. One of Ian's favorites was making an Indian headband, coming up with an Indian name, (he chose Brave One), and then making Indian paintings with symbols.

I had all three kids make a turkey this week to display at Thanksgiving dinner. I also had them do a writing about what they are thankful for. I am so proud that all three of them wrote about being thankful for Jesus as their first thing!  I let the baby make a hand print turkey which she then destroyed : )

We will take off all of next week and then pick back up for two weeks to finish unit 9 in both guides and then do a fun one week Christmas unit before taking off a few weeks for Christmas. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Here is our Friday Showcase video that I share weekly on Facebook. It has helped a few of my fellow homeschool mommas get interested in Heart of Dakota!
