Unit 9 of LHFHG and Preparing

We enjoyed our week off!!! Family, food, movies, and decorating!!! We are now back and ready to finish up the semester!!!

Day1

LHFHG
*Phonics: Today we did the letter m in AAR. Ian is doing great and got back into routine very smoothly!!
*Fine Motor: We did some cutting and pasting with rhyming words! Ian is getting better each time we rhyme!
*Math: Matching numbers to their names was our focus. This is very hard for my little guy right now but I know he will get it!!!
*Storytime: Today we read how Peter's friend Johnny Chuck tricked Reddy Fox into a hornets nest!
*History/Rhyme: Today we read about Elijah fleeing from Ahab and also about God taking him up to heaven! Ian loved the rhyme that went with it and caught on quickly to counting backwards!
*Bible/Music: The new verse is Proverbs 9:14 about doing things without complaining. Ian loved the song and wanted to trace some of his verse.
*Rotating: We did not act out our story only because we just had this lesson in Sunday School and acted it out : )

Preparing
*Reading: We started biographies today!!! We plan to just do two weeks work and then take off for the holidays.
*Writing: We are working on a report on John the Baptist! This fell at a great time because the girls have a bird report due in  few weeks for their Flying Creatures science class at co op.
*Language: We worked more on subject and predicates and finding the simple subject and predicate within a sentence.
*Poetry: Our poem for the unit is Autumn's Fire. We talked about the imagery in the poem and the rhyming pattern and why fires would happen in the fall.
*Bible: We are adding to verses to Psalm 34 this week making our memory selection verses 1-5. We talked about having faith, peace, and trust in God even when it seems hard and we don't want to just like David talked about in the verses.
*Math: The girls worked on 9's today in math. Ally got another section of her sundae and Audrey was very close.
*Science: The girls added to their desert scene today by drawing and labeling a flower and a bird found in the desert.
*History Reading: We read from Grandpa's Box about the sin of King David and how he truly repented so God kept his promise of the one true king coming from his bloodline.
*Storytime: I am reading A Christmas Carol to the kids this month. The girls were so upset by Scrooge and his demeanor and hatred for Christmas.
*Independent History: Drawing and coloring a sheep to represent King David's shepherd days was their assignment.
*History Project: The girls are working on a door hanger with their names and their meaning. We wrote our names and looked up the meaning today.
*Rotating: Our project was to research the name meanings of Joshua, Jacob, Ruth, and Moses as well as our selves. It was fun assignment and both girls names refer to nobility so they acted like royals!

Day 2

LHFHG
*Phonics: We worked on sight words and letter sounds, wrote a sentence, and did the letter o in AAR! Ian is still not ready to "read" as he has not made the connection between each letter has a sound and we put sounds together to read words but I not overly concerned right now as he is just 5 : ) He wants to read though and that is a good thing! We are reading his small sight word books.
*Fine Motor: We did some letter writing in HWOT and some sentence spacing and writing on his white board. We did do one page in RS that was about inference.
*Math: We are working on the teen family and separating it by tens and ones. Ian is catching on. We put number words on hold as it was not clicking but plan to review those in our daily calendar time for reinforcement.
*Storytime: Today Reddy Fox told a lie about how he got stung. He said he was helping a scared baby opossum. His friends knew he was lying but didn't say anything.
*History/Rhyme: We read about Elijah going up to heaven and how Elisha helped a poor widow woman pay her taxes and keep her sons. Ian is also enjoying the rhyme that goes with this unit an the counting backwards.
*Bible/Music: Ian traced part of his verse and then danced around and sang his song.
*Rotating: Today was art and is usually a hit or miss with him. Today he wanted to do it. He used chalk, water, a sugar to paint a picture of heaven.

Preparing
*Reading: The girls had just a reading day in their books today! They love days with no other assignment!
*Writing: Publishing their paragraphs about John the Baptist was their goal for the day and they completed it!!! They both did a good job. We will work on a paragraph about Mary next week.
*Language: We took some time and did some more sentence diagramming with direct objects. They are getting better at identifying them.
*Poetry: The girls did some creative writing and each wrote a poem about spring. I was very happy with how these turned out, especially Audrey who is my reluctant writer.
*Bible: We prayed over our verses and discussed times when we could use them or share them with others.
*Math: The girls took their mad 9 skills and applied it to division today. They both did very well and I am so happy that things are finally clicking again in math!
*Science: The girls read about taking plants out of the desert because the animals that live there rely on them. They also read that the desert gets about 10 inches of rain a year. Their assignment was to read and retell.
*History Reading: I read from CHOW about the gods an goddesses of the Greeks and Romans. The girls found it silly and strange and could not believe some of the things the people did and how they really believed that the gods they prayed to were real. We then read from Acts about the people who thought Paul and Barnabas were gods and how Paul tried to teach them differently.
*Story time: We are still enjoying  A Christmas Carol. Scrooge just got visited by his old business partner Jacob Marley and will soon be visited by the first of three ghosts!! We are all hoping that Scrooge will change his mean ways!
*Independent History: Today the girls copied a paragraph about David being a Shepard for copy work and cursive practice.
*History Project: The girls worked on their door hangers by adding pictures of things they like to do.
*Rotating: Today the girls did vocabulary. Most of the words pertained to the Greek culture of gods and goddesses but I felt it helped them truly see how the Greeks and Romans relied on silly things rather than God.

Day 3

LHFHG
*Phonics: Today we spent time working on sight words : ) Ian is doing okay and got 13/23 we have been working on.
*Fine Motor: We did some sentence writing today in his journal. He wrote "I have a cat." and then drew a cute picture of our cat Belle Belle.
*Math: We did our calendar skills and then worked more on number words and number matching.
*Storytime: Reddy Fox just can't give up trying to get Peter Rabbit. Today he pretended to still be hurt but Peter once again caught on to his trick!
*History/Rhyme: Our stories today were about Namann being healed in the Jordan and Elisha being kept safe by God's army. Every night Ian prays for God's army of angles to protect him so he LOVED the illustration that went with the story. He also enjoyed the rhyme and baby sister tried to do it too!
*Bible/Music: We are really focusing on applying our verse!!! Ian is slowly catching on and when he starts to whine he remembers and says that he is not following the bible.
*Rotating: We did some science today and talked about washing with soap and water. We learned that water cannot wash away our sores only God can do that.

Preparing
*Reading: We are still working on biographies. Audrey finished her first of two books and Ally is still reading the one book about missionary Gladys Alward.
*Writing: This week we are working on a paragraph about Mary. It fits in perfectly into the season!!! The girls made outlines and a rough draft. They are doing very well.
*Language: We did some reviewing today over identifying parts of a sentence and diagramming. The girls are getting better but it is still a bit confusing for them. We also looked at the parts of a paragraph.
*Poetry: We learned that RLS grew up in Scotland in the mid 1800's.
*Bible: The girls had bible quiet time today and prayer time.
*Math: We have taken a little bit of a break from multiplication and division and worked on money skills in math today. We did do a lesson on spending and saving when I took each of the big kids out by themselves to Christmas shop for their siblings. They bought a gift for each of the other three kids with their money : )
*Science: The girls had to read and answer questions today about desert animals.
*History Reading: I read to the girls from CHOW about the Trojan War and how it is considered a legend or fairy tale by some. They really enjoyed it and did a great oral retell!!
*Story time: I read aloud from A Christmas Carol and the girls are really enjoying it!!!
*Independent History: I do not have the Trojan Horse book so I am glad we read about in CHOW. The girls had to copy the verse Psalm 96:3-5 in cursive into their common place books.
*History Project: The girls completed their name signs!!!
*Rotating: Today we did some geography in looking at Sparta and Troy and comparing them to old times and to today. I also had the girls identify and name the oceans by memory.

Day 4

LHFHG
*Phonics: Phonics has been slow lately and Ian is forgetting some sounds!!!  We have started reviewing random flashcards daily to reinforce these.
*Fine Motor: Today our page from RS fit nicely into math. We had to count and match dominoes!!! Ian did great!!
*Math: We are working on teen numbers and it is a little slow going. Ian can count his numbers and write them when told or looking but from memory it is giving him some trouble! We will get there.
*Storytime: Ian and I read about Johnny Chuck eating a lot to prepare for winter, which confused Peter because rabbits do not hibernate.
*History/Rhyme: Today's story was about Jonah so it was easy and quick! Ian enjoyed telling me the story instead of me reading it to him : )
*Bible/Music: Ian finished tracing his verse today!! He can almost say the whole thing on his own. The last part trips him up.
*Rotating: Today was a science day!! We looked at some things that float and some that sink.Ian come up with that heavy things will sink and light things will float!

Preparing
*Reading: I am having the girls finish up their biographies. We will do a Christmas unit next week and then be off a few weeks so we want to get this study done so we have only been reading with no written assignments.
*Writing: The girls published their paragraphs about Mary and they were so so good!!! I like their style and they had all the components of a good paragraph!
*Language: We liked at the parts of a paragraph which fit into our writing on Mary!!
*Poetry We skipped sharing the poem this week :(
*Bible: The girls copied Psalm 34:1-5 into their common place books in cursive.
*Math: We are adding and subtracting money and remembering those decimal points!!!
*Science: The girls found out through experimentation that the soil in the desert gets very hard and water is able to just sit on top of it and run off! We had fun using peanut butter, a pan, cereal, and water to show this!
*History Reading: I read about the King of the Jews from a CHOW and the girls had a written narration to do. We went through and answered the main 5w questions and then they went on to write some good detailed paragraphs.
*History Independent: Drawing and coloring a Trojan horse was on our list! The girls are so much better about drawing and not complaining!!! Their drawings looked very good.
*Rotating: Timeline was today's project. We added the Trojan War, King David, and Solomon building the temple

Day 5

LHFHG
*Phonics: We did a lot of review of sounds with a focus on q from AAR. Ian is enjoying his sight word flash cards and wants to get more each time.
*Fine Motor: Today we just focused on handwriting since we are way ahead in our RS book.
*Math: working on teen numbers is our focus and it is getting better!!!! He is wanting to count EVERYTHING he can!!
*Storytime: Peter Rabbit is still wanting to know about hibernating. He went to Grandfather Frog who was also waiting to get settled for winter. Peter left still confused!
*History: Ian and I read about two young kings, Joash and Josiah. They were young like him but still could do and did mighty work for God!!!
*Bible: Ian is applying his verse but cannot say it all and that is okay!!!

Extras we do each week:
Piano practice for the girls 15 minutes each day with a 30 minute lesson once a week.
Keyboarding using Keyboarding Without Tears twice a week for all three kids.
I also try to get them active each day with various activities from their sports and dance to playing outside, going to the park, putting in a PE video, you tube videos, elliptical, taking a walk, and more!!
Journals: Each week the kids do a journal entry. Usually it is free write time but sometimes I do give them a topic. I throw in math lessons sometimes as well.
