This time instead of blogging by a unit Or every two weeks I am going to try and write about each week! My goal is to just hit the main points in each child's daily work.
Monday
All of the kids started on unit 21 of their guides. For a fun thing we went to Krispey Kreme dressed and talking like pirates to get free donuts!!
LHFHG: Ian is learning about exploring the new world. We read from our history reader, looked at maps, made a ship out of Legos and sailed it across a map, and sang a cute song in our rhymes in motion about sailing across the sea!
In math he started his new book and we introduced subtraction! This may take him a bit to get used to but he did well today. For reading we did lesson 20 of AAR over the sound of sh. He is getting it! Slow and steady wins the race!
Preparing: The girls in history had a lot going on today. We are leaning about the Christians being persecuted. We read about Herod killing James and trying to kill Peter. Later on however Herod was struck down. The girls researched about mosaics and then started creating one for our history project. In our story time we read about the death of Jesus and how the main character Eli is dealing with it because he is not saved.
In language we talked about varying our sentences in style and length when we write. In our writing with IEW we made an outline about the story of Thesueus and the Minotaur. The girls also did some dictation and spelling along with a reading assignment from DITHOR.
They started their new math book and worked in line segments and rays along with built in review and a speed drill.
The girls also practiced piano and played Uno PE with Ian.
Tuesday
Today is our co op day!! The girls went to their science class and Ian did his first grade enrichment class. When we came home we did a little bit of school.
Ian reviewed his AAR lesson from Monday along with a math lesson and AWANA work.
The girls had to practice piano, do a review page in language, create a rough draft for their writing, and work on their AWANA verses.
Wednesday
LHFHG: Ian had a great day doing day two of unit 21. We read about Columbus and his travels and how he thought the world was round and not flat. We tested a ball as a ship and sailed it across the flat table for science. We worked on his verse for HOD and AWANA as well as the unit rhyme. In math we did some more subtracting. Speed drills are going fantastic! In AAR, Ian read two stories and did very well on them. We talked about the setting of a story.
Preparing: The girls finished up day one of unit 21 today. It was a light day since we only did the right side of the guide.
In science they read and added to their star books. They also did some homework for their co op science class. We did their AWANA verses as well as read and discussed their verses for the unit Psalm 119: 169-176. The girls did their math lesson over math vocabulary of division terms and review. In writing, creating a rough draft of the second paragraph of our myth retell was done. They had to use a checklist and make sure their work had all the components. I also had the girls each do their spelling and or dictation work. For language the girls had their second test, one over unit two and they both did MUCH better than the last one!! I do have them correct missed work though to make sure they get the concept. They like me to grade their papers and put a score on it. As a final activity for the day the girls had their piano lessons and we all had AWANA in the evening.
Thursday
LHFHG: Ian and I read about Balboa being the first to see the Pacific Ocean though he called it the South Sea. He also was part of the start of the Panama Canal. We looked at this on a map and how it connected two oceans and shortened travel routes. We sang our history rhyme and traces some of the unit verse. Ian has new AWANA verses so we also worked on them. I read a chapter from Chatterer the Red Squirrel about how he should not tell Perer Rabbit where his new home is because Peter has a big mouth.
In math we did more on subtraction as well as review of previous skills and a speed drill. We finished our day with an AAR lesson over ch on which Ian did well.
Preparing: The girls started day two of the unit. These days are usually are longest. In our history reading we heard the story of how Luke was a witness to Paul and his hardships while spreading the gospel and how he wrote about them than the book of Acts. Our read aloud had the main character, Eli, very confused about the resurrection of Jesus and being convicted to follow him but not ready to do so. We are loving this book!! The girls added to the mosaic cross they are working on and also did some cursive copy work on their common place books by adding 1 Peter 1-24-25. Today was also vocabulary day and the girls had to define, draw a picture, and write a sentence for these words: correspondent, stocks, gospel, skeptically, and eyewitness.
In our literacy part of the day the girls finished their first folktale and then did a small retelling. We did some spelling and dictation work and had a lesson on blind in language. For writing the girls wrote a rough draft for the third paragraph of our myth retelling using the story sequence chart.
We finished the day with a math lesson over millions and a review of radius and diameter. The girls also did a speed drill and fast focus practice. They also had to practice piano. Ally had dance class tonight and Ian had a baseball game.
Friday
LHFHG: Ian took the day off from his HOD guide today so that we could spend some more time on reading, math and writing. We practiced his math facts and played a math game using the terms greater than and less than. Journal writing was done to work on sounds and handwriting. Ian wrote about explorers since we read about a few in history this week. For reading he did a review game over the th, sh, and ch sounds and read a fluency sheet and also a sight works book. I did a running record on him as he read and he scored an 88% on his book. We also did some art in his dinosaur drawing book.
Preparing:
Today, I had the girls finish up day 2 of unit 21 along with some of our other weekly activities we do. From HOD the girls had to read and pray over their bible passage, we did some creative writing with our poem, and we also did some reading and retelling in science.
Each Friday to lighten our load by the end of the week the girls have the following: health, art, a book quiz on Book Adventurer, a math game from either online or our collection of games as well as xtramath, journal writing, poetry tea time, and making a video to showcase something they enjoyed or did well on this week.
For Poetry Tea Time this week we read poems about China, the next country we will study. I found some cute and funny books that were written in a poetic flow that I read. We do our PTT while the littlest VanEvera takes a nap.
Extras we do each week:
Piano practice for the girls 15 minutes each day with a 30 minute lesson once a week.
Keyboarding using Keyboarding Without Tears twice a week for Ian and Typing.com for the girls.
I also try to get them active each day with various activities from their sports and dance to playing outside, going to the park, putting in a PE video, you tube videos, elliptical, taking a walk, and more!!
Journals: Each week the kids do a journal entry. Usually it is free write time but sometimes I do give them a topic. I throw in math lessons sometimes as well.
Co op is attended once a week for all of us! We to on Tuesdays for one class. The girls are taking Apologia Swimming Creatures. Ian is taking an enrichment first grade rotation class and Emersyn is in the nursery/preschool. I teach the k4- 2nd grade history rotation.
This year we started Poetry Tea Time (PTT) once a week.
For Art we are doing Art Hub for Kids on youtube once a week. It is free, fun, and easy! The kids love it!

The girls wanted to study different countries this year. I had them each pick a few countries they wanted to learn about and what they wanted to know. We will take our time and do a read aloud, a biography, map work, art, research, cooking, and a culminating activity. Some of the counties we plan to "visit" are France, Japan, China, Moracco, and Italy.
Highlights of the week:
All three kids are ahead in sections in AWANA and not only learning their verses but remembering them!
I tied out the online Kroger shopping and pick up and LOVED it!!! I saved $40 using coupons too!!
We had the first day of fall and though it is still HOT we are all excited about the new season and cannot wait for the fall weather to get here!
I was able to save a TON of money this week with deals!! We scored 4 dozen free donuts, got half off snacks one day at a local restaurant, went out to eat twice where both places had kids eat free nights, Chick fil a comped our lunch due to me leaving my wallet in the car on accident, and I have three of the four kids costumes done for just $6!!!!
There is a video up on I Can Do All Things, Including Homeschooling page on Facebook that the kids made this week! Ian shares his art, Ally her language test, and Audrey plays the piano!
