Unit 22

Monday

Ian is working on the letter Qq this week for reading, the number 8 in math, the color yellow, the sight word see, and is reviewing Jesus' birth in bible.

He loved learning the yellow song today!! Even my big girls remembered it and sang along!

Our bible story is review as we hit a lot on it over Christmas. It is fun seeing what he remembers!

The letter Q is our focus of the week. Today we identified the letter, wrote it, andade a small list of words starting with it. That was a challenge!!

The girls are on unit 22!! We started on the unit Friday so today we worked on day 2.

In history we read more about John Audoboun and how he was a good marksman. When exploring the new lands men had to be good shots, able to shoot the wick of a candle from 100 yards away! We tried to hit a target from that far and failed :(

We then went on to study our poem of the week called "Untitled". We heard our hymn and sang along. We also did some toe touches as we reviewed our verse and talked about diligence.

We then did our science notebook and drew a honeybee. We read about them the last day we met. I am so proud of Audrey that she wanted to be diligent and add some scenery to hers!

The girls worked on their xtramath. I think I am going to start using the HIG and textbook from 2B that we didn't use when we did the workbook. I feel it will be good review. LOF was fun but they were not learning.

In reading the girls read from their books and learned about asking questions about what they read and then finding them. We also did this with our storytime book.

In literacy we reviewed irregular verbs orally. We also worked on cursive writing. We skipped dictation today because the teacher just forgot! I also let them off without a writing lesson since they did so well on their work and attitude.

Ian had speech in the afternoon and the rest of the day was spent outside!

Tuesday
Co op and dance day!!

Wednesday
Another fun and busy day in HOD!!

Ian worked on the letter q and we used a magnifying glass to spy the letter on our letter page. We wrote numbers and shapes and did lots of counting. We read about the wise men following the star to find baby Jesus.

The girls did day 3 of the unit. We read our devotional and bible lesson during breakfast and concluded by practicing our hymn.

We read our poem and found the rhyme pattern. We learned about combining verbs in language and how to make a cursive u in handwriting. We did get to dictation today and both girls passed passage 55.

The girls read their books and we discussed their books. In storytime we focused on the main idea of the chapter I read and the girls did great!!! Our book gets better everyday!

For writing we used the book from last week, It Could Always Be Worse. We used our senses from the story to fill in a story map that we will use later to write about the book.

In math we started using the textbook from Singapore 2b to review. I did not use it when we did the workbook. Day one brought back some important skills!

History was spent more on John Audoboun and his hunt for a panther! We then did our vocabulary for the week.

We ended with science and read about Hranny Robertsons boat trip from Scotland to America. We learned that a boat has air pockets to prevent sinking! The girls enjoyed the experiment and had fun turning the glass over!!

We also had speech, piano lessons, and church to complete the day!!

Thursday
Today we finally had a whole day at home ;) Boy did we get a lot accomplished!

Ian worked on letters and numbers and we finished our bible reason for the unit. He is getting better at tracking and counting one to one :) As a fun art project  we painted with q tips to go along with learning the letter Q.

The big girls finished day 4 and day 5.

We finished our history by learning about the poet Longfellow. We read his poem A Pslam of Life and did an art project with it. We added it to our notebook and also added his name along with John Audoboun to our timelines.

We read our poem and tried to think of a good tutors for it since it was called Untiiled. The winner was God's Art!

We read our verse and had a bible lesson from Paul out of Acts where he instructed the people to keep after God even after he is gone and it will be hard. We then listened to our hymn and rejoiced that God is always there to help us and be diligent.

We reviewed in language and took it a step further in writing. We used the book we have been reading to find examples of parts of speech we have learned so far. I love this activity and the girls did too. I let them work on it together!

In science we read about milking and the jobs it took to get it done. For snack today we made chocolate milk and had to "milk" the syrup!! We also went ahead later in the day when daddy or home and read about the pioneers making butter and made our own!! It was so much fun and boy am I glad we don't have to churn like the pioneers did!

We finally found a clue in our storytelling boom about why it is called the Balloon Man of San Francisco. A balloon man is coming to town and we can't wait to read what happens. We also discussed obedience! Our character is very obedient to his parents!

In DIRHOR we worked on main idea and details and the girls did well. We learned how details are like stairs and the very top is the main idea.

In math we reviewed adding and subtracting strategies! It took a little longer than I thought but once the girls remembered it went well.

Tomorrow we will start on to unit 23.

Friday

Ian finished up our Q week by using the pattern blocks toakebthe upper and lowercase letter and an animal starting with it!  We also worked on his sight words and writing skills. He wrote I can see. We also read a book of his choosing.

The girls started in day one of unit 23. We read our new bible verse Proverbs 16;3 and learned our new trait of discipline. This tied in nicely with our history reading about Horace Greely. He was a poor farmers son who excelled in reading and spelling. He disciplined himself to do his work first and then his studies and then play.

In geography we learned that Horsce lives in New Hamlshire and later moved to Vermount. We used map and the map scale to see how far away these places are from us. It was about 1200 miles.

Our poem for tr week fit in with shot ace also. It is about a person who loves books and spends their day reading with different authors. We found the vocabulary words and the rhyming pattern for the poem. We then listened to our hymn.

In science we read about Sarah getting her own wool from her lamb so she can knit and sell what she makes.

In language we reviewed adjectives and also practiced our cursive as well as did a dictation passage.

Math was spent practing previously learned strategies to add and subtract. The girls had 11 problems each to solve and they both got them all!

The girls listened to our read aloud and then narrated back to me about the chapter. They are very anxious to hear the next one!

In DITHOR we discussed the traits of obedience and attentiveness. We found examples in the bible and the gils found examples in their books.

We ended by writing in journals, which we do weekly. Today they had to use the planning sheet from yesterday to write about what it would be like to live in a crowded house like in the book we read.

This weekend brings on two birthday parties, church, and errands!
