Unit 25, how did that happen!

It seems like we just started the year and we are already on unit 25! We only have 9 more units to go and then we will have Bigger and Little Hands done!

We had a late start today due to the fact that Ian is sick. We had to visit the ER last night because he has croup and had a small asthma attack.

Monday

Daddy was off work today due to the holiday plus we had a lot of ice :( Ian had the day off because we were up very late. The girls got an easy day though!

We read about Kit Carson, a hunter and guide for those coming out west. We learned how he was trapped in a tree by two bears and how he made a club to hit them in their nose, the most sensitive part of their body. We made a bear mask in art to really drive in te story. We also added Kit Carson to our timeline.

In science we read about how to catch fish and wrote about it for our science notebook. We learned last week how Willy learned to catch fish by hand from his Indian friend Nekeek.

We read our bible verse and talked of hopefulness. We also read about Martin Luthor and his hymn A Mighty Fortress is our God. We then listened to our hymn.

We did not do math or cursive today but did start our humor books. We are reading Homer Price as our storytime book and though it is older than Nanny :) it is still cute and funny! The girls started their new books in DITHOR.

In writing we are still using the book Flossie and the Fox. We are researching fixes this week! The girls love using the Internet (with supervision)! They have four questions to look up this week and will write up a small report at the end of the week.

We ended with more learning about paragraphs in language and a dictation passage. We also did our poem and found the new words, the lines and stanzas, and also discussed the meaning.

It was a short and light day!

Tuesday

The ice we have canceled co op and dance classes for today so we did school at the house much to the kids dismay ;) I have a baby, a kiddo with croup, and my son just got out of a cast so the thought of another broken bone is still too fresh! The kids did not go out in the ice.

Ian did his school with Daddy today while I worked with the girls. I did promise a short day :) I didn't get photos of Ian and his best pal working hard!

The girls did half a math review where it seems that regrouping is still a problem!! Ugh! I hated it in school as well. We will keep practicing.

We worked on cursive a bit and started some capital letters.

We wrote a few paragraphs for language and did a dictation passage. We also did some more research for our fox writing. We read our story time book and discussed cause and effect and found examples in what we read. The girls did their reading and I listened a bit and then we had some good discussion.

In science we talked about refracted light and how it made it hard to catch a fish even when you could see it! We didn't do any writing with our exploration but did discuss it.

We read our bible devotion as a family since daddy was home again! We also sang our hymn together. We took our poem and sang it to various versions of children's songs and it as so much fun!! We made the day as light and fun as possible!

In history we read about Marian Sloan, a 7 year old girls traveling the Santa Fe trail with her mother and brother headed to California! We added just two words to our vocabulary! This is always a great thing for the girls because we usually do all three!

Tomorrow things should pick back up to normal!!

Wesnesday

Ian has his last speech therapy today! I am so proud of him! He is such a hard worker! We did colors, letters, numbers, and bible today!

The girls did day 4 of unit 25 today. W e did sit ups with our verse, onamotopeia with our poem, sang our hymn, worked on paragraphs, did a dictation passage, and leaned to write first and last names in cursive! That was just 45 minutes of the day!

In math they finished the review we were working on this week.

In science they had to retelle what I read. It as about all of the things the Indians taught the pioneers. The Robertsons liked  learning from their Indian friends.

The girls are in different stages of their research for writing. Ally has answered all of her questions and working on her report. Audrey just finished her questions and will start on her report tomorrow.

We are reading Homer Price for our humor read aloud and so far so good! We talked about joy today in our reading. In the girls books they had to read and then find examples of cause and effect within their books. They did well! I am enjoying the double dipping of DITHOR and our storytime. The girls get more practice.

In history we were introduced to Abraham Lincoln. We learned that he was poor but loves to read and learn. He did a lot of hard work. His grandfather was a friend of Daniel Boone's. He lived in different places. He was very honest!!

We then worked in finding states on a map. The girls are picking up on this better than I thought! They made it a fun competition.

The day ended with piano lessons and time with Pawpaw!

Thursday

Ian and I had a fun day working on letters, reading the bible, drawing, and dancing! I love these sweet moments with my boy! He is doing well with recognizing number and letters and even writing them!

Here is his favorite book right now for us to read together. He is all boy!

In bible time I have started having the girls read along in their bibles for the day 5 lesson. Today we read from Pslam 33:12-22 about hoping in God. We played our hymns in the background.

We did some language, dictation, and cursive for a few minutes! We also finishe up chapter 2 in our story time and did a retelling. The girls read their books and looked for examples of joy and thanksgiving.

In writing both girls did their weekly learning logs of five things they learned his week. They also wrote a short report about foxes from their research!

In science we read about fish and demonstrates how sound is louder in air than water.

In history we finished up unit 25 by mapping out three routes taken during the Gold rush and also doing a fun coloring page.

In math they did xtramath and a subtraction page. It rounded out the day well!

Friday

Daddy was home again this week! The weather here has really been something!

Ian and I finished up the unit and did a lot of reading and writing work and some work with sight words. It was his fun day so we used pattern blocks and played bingo!

The girls started day one of unit 26!! We did not do cursive, language, dictation, writing, music, or math today. We took a light day :) School lasted maybe an hour today. With Daddy home and the baby's first birthday party this weekend we had a lot to get done!

The girls did do their reading as well as storytime.

We started our new verse and poem for the week.

We read about haying in our science book.

In history we learned more about Abraham Lincoln. He was respected and a a self learned man. He became President during the Civil War. We read about the hat he wore which became the basis for our art lesson.

We drew cylinders which included a stove top  hat and logs. All based on our knowledge of Abe Lincoln.

We will further study the Civil War next week as we continue unit 26.
