Unit 14 Review

This was another great week in our HOD learning journey!! We are now learning about what happened to the Pilgrims after the first Thanksgiving.

Unit 14: More Problems for the Pilgrims

Verse: We worked on our AWANA verses this week instead of HOD. The girls are one jewel away from finishing their books this year!

Song: Track #8 In My Father's House

Poem: The Arrow and the Song

Bible: We read Exodus 14: 5- 31 about Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt and crossing the Red Sea. We did a science experiment  with water, soap, and pepper to demonstrate God's miracle.

Storytime: Charlotte's Web by E.B White
I cannot believe we are just about done with this book! The girls are really enjoying and I cannot wait for them to see the movie. We were going to attend the play this weekend but plans changed : (

Spelling: or Phonics: or
We worked really hard on the or list #2 this week and both girls did amazingly well and passed all of their words for the week.

History/Geography: This week we learned about how life was like after the first Thanksgiving. We learned how friends from England joined the Plymouth colony as well as how the Indians tried to heal the sick verses how the Pilgrims healed them. We also learned about how the Indians sent two messages to the Pilgrims, one about wanting to start a war and one about Chief Massasoit being ill. The girls were very interested.
Geography was looking at a globe and categorizing the continents by being in the northern or southern hemispheres.

Science: Our science lessons this week were over snake bodies and how we digest solids and liquids. We learned that a snake is cold blooded and covered in rough scales and that it is easier for us to digest liquids rather than solids so that is why we need liquids, broths, and soups, when we are sick.

Writing: In writing this week we learned about and wrote a friendly thank you letter. We wrote a letter together on big paper and learned the parts of a friendly letter. Then the girls had to choose someone to write a thank you letter to. They wrote the letter and also learned how to fill out an envelope. We worked in abbreviations, zip codes, commas, capitalization, and more. It was great and girls cannot wait hear how how happy their aunt and their Nanny are to get their letters.

Reading: The girls read the classic Amelia Bedelia in their HOD work and then read a book each day of their choosing for their independent reading of 15 minutes a day. They each go to pick their comprehension project. Ally picked to write an acrostic poem about Fancy Nancy and Audrey did a story element cube about a Henry and Mudge books she read.
Math: The girls are still working on bigger numbers in math. They are adding one more and ten more as well as subtracting one more and ten more. We do this daily in calender with our number of the day so it fairly easy, though we did review how to use our hundreds chart.

Art/PE/Computer/Music/Enrichment:  In art this week we made the England flag or as we learned to call it Union Jack. We also did an extra art lesson about lines from out other art book. In PE we did some yoga and for music we had our piano lessons. Here is a picture of the theory books the girls use. We do theory once a week. In computer we did typing and free games and for enrichment the girls did Logic Links and Subtraction map skills.
It was a good week and we finished up a bit early and went ahead to week 15 because next week we are leaving for a trip to Branson and then we will take the whole week of Thanksgiving off : )
