A review of week 10 with HOD: BLHFHG

We took our time this week and used all five days to complete this unit! Last week we all felt so rushed and hurried with everything we had going on. It was nice to go a little slower and do a little each day. i am trying to stay on track and get a unit done each week so that when the baby comes we will not get to far off track. With my husband being a teacher he will teach them while I am "off" for a few weeks. We also like to have our breaks when Daddy is off of school so we like to finish our core curriculum by the end of May and then do fun unit studies for June, take off July, and start back up with the new school year in August.

It takes us about 1 1/2 hours to complete the boxes in HOD and then about another hour and a half for piano practice, computer time, extra art, PE, independent reading, free play, and IEW writing. We get about 3-4 hours in each day depending on how long different lessons take and on Monday's we get about 6-7 hours done because we also have Co Op classes that day.

Unit 10: Pilgrims Settle at Plymouth

Verse: Pslam 118:1  " Oh give thanks unto the Lord for He is good: His mercy endureth forever. The kids are also working on AWANA verses and right now Ally and Audrey are memorizing Psalm 23 and doing GREAT! Ian has a different short verse each week in his Cubby class.

Song: Give Thanks to the Lord

Poem: What is Heavy? We had fun with this one since it was so short and in an question answer form. We would take turns reading the question and see who could answer it!

Storytime: Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder
The girls are really into this book and cannot wait to read it every day. We all took turns reading pages this week. We talked about Faith as our character word this week and setting as our story element. Here are their pictures of the books setting, Laura's house, compared to our house.

Spelling: Long i words Phonics: Audrey Blends and Allly multisylabic words. The girls are almost done with books 2 and 4 and I better not forget to order their next ones soon!! Both girls mastered their words for this week! Ian is working on  f and s in speech as well as letter recall over letters I have introduced and writing his name in "mommy school" as he calls it. He is also working on his HIPPY lessons and learning more about shapes and fine motor control when coloring and writing.

History/Geography: Our history lessons were over the Pilgrims looking for the right piece of land to settle on. The girls learned that the men went out looking while the women and children stayed on the Mayflower. One little boy named Francis got himself into some trouble by shooting off a gun in the gun powder room! Instead of the suggested art project I had the girls draw what they thought he looked like when the gun went off!

Their geography lesson was to draw a map of the Cape Cod Bay/Plymouth area. We looked up a map on the Internet and the girls used that to make their own maps. I thought they did good considering they have their mommy's art talent or lack their of :)
Here is a shot of one of the girls filling in her weekly history notebook page. We do this each week as a review/assessment of what they learned. I am so happy they can do this on their own, though I do have to remind them to answer in complete sentences!

Bible: We read Psalm 40:1-5 about David waiting patiently and related it to how patient the Pilgrims had to be. We also played a game where they had to practice patience and boy was it hard! They come by their lack of patience from their father :)

Science: In science this week both of our lessons were related to water. In the first one we made a model of the ocean floor to demonstrate why the Mayflower needed to be near water that was deep enough to hold it. The girls and Ian both really had fun with this.
In this lesson the girls reviewed the water cycle. Our baggy is still hanging and we are observing it.

Writing: This week we worked on making an outline from a narrative text and the girls had the best time learning about David. The story of him fighting Goliath has always been one of their favorites. We combined three lessons into this week and next week we are taking a week off of story writing. The girls worked on review adjectives, verbs, and who/which clauses. I am very proud of their writing this week.
Our language focus from HOD was to review exclamatory and command sentences which the girls already know well, so I added in combining sentences that are similar using commas and the word and. This was from our DLR book.
In their reading the girls read Owl At Home (2.7/L) and both really enjoyed it. To sum up the book after they finished it, they wrote in their journals about it and also made a word search. They love to make up their own word searches.

Math: The girls worked on division this week and did well. We are still using pictures and really focusing on the meaning. Division is taking a big set of things and putting them into equal groups. I didn't get any pictures this week ;(

Art/PE/Computer/Enrichment:  This week's enrichment activities came from these two books, that my girls adore! They are fun and challenging and my kids cannot get enough. They are made my mindware and really help in logical thinking skills.
Here is one of my little budding pianist doing her daily practice.

For computer time the girls both worked more on typing from the free typing site I found. They love the Halloween typing game! Here is the website again: www.freetypinggame.net. I have the girls do a lesson and set the wpm and then they may chose a game to play once they pass the wpm set on the lesson.
