Unit 32

Pioneers travel the Oregon Trail and the California Trail

It is hard to believe we only have two more units in Beyond! Here is a peek of this week.

In history we met Nell whose family traveled the Oregon a Trail and Ken who was at the end of the California Trail. We learned about their lives and also mapped out the two trails.

In science we mined for gold as we read about the Gold Rush of 1849. We also made a graph yo show the jump in California's   population due to the gold.

We also read and learned about bears, which also fit nicely into our emerging reader book.

Our bible verse was Proverbs 18:5 and our lesson was from Pslam 121. The girls made an art project from our reading.

Both girls also finished the review sections in their AWANA books.

In music they worked on hymns in piano as well as theory.

In spelling this weeks words were coir words! The girls had fun singing the color songs from preschool. They had to out the words in ABC order and did great!

We finished our read aloud, Follow My Leader, and it was so good! The girls wrote about the book in their journals and we also made an event mobile! It was fun.

The girls finished The Bears on Hemlock Mountain and so as a fun culminating activity we made a cereal box report!! They wrote a list of characters, setting, problem, solution, a summary, title, author, and gave the book a star review. They drew a picture if their favorite part. This was also our big writing project for the week.

We then started our last ER, The a Courage of Sarah Nobel.

In math we are still working on multiplication in twos and threes.

The kids had a lot of outside play/PE time.

We did do some community service as our state was hit hard by tornados. Two communities are mere miles from us! We collected supplies for one of our co op families who lost everything! Please keep our state in your prayers.

I did take time to teach tornado safety but the girls were freaked out and did not want any part in learning about them. I hope that by helping, praying, and knowing God is always there, that this fear will lessen.

We are looking forward to the next few weeks of HOD and then animal study and a zoo trip to end our first grade year!
